My name is Bryan (aka Grumpy).
I have been involved with dirt bike motorcycles since the ripe age of 7yrs old.
Started riding at the age of 8yrs old , riding a mini bike around the yard and graduating to where I could ride solo around camp in the Southern California desert with the whole family. As a family we would camp and trail ride in the desert with other families who lived close by in out neighborhood.
My first bike was a Benelli 50cc, which mom and dad purchased for me from the Montgomery Wards showroom. I remember dad pushing that bike to get it started more than I actually rode it, (Love you dad).!
At the age of 15 I was old enough to enter my first enduro riding a 1971 DKW 125cc motorcycle in the Hook n Ladder Enduro with my dad and brother. It was my first real event and I was so nervous. And with that I got the bug to compete as much as I could.. With mam and dad's permission and with keeping my grades up too. Which was and is very important.
My first true desert racing experience was with DRA (Desert Racing Association) events, with some CRC, SRA, and URA family enduros.
Growing up in the 1970's I always had a Brownie 110mm camera to shoot with that my dad gave me. Shooting all kinds of pictures be it in the desert while camping and taking pictures of my bubbies riding around camp or on summer vacations again traveling with the family. Then dad gave me his Yashica 35mm camera which I practiced a lot until it finally wore out.
In the 1980's after graduating high school I started working construction in the Laborers Union 783 - San Bernardino, Ca.
Which is where I got the nickname Grumpy. I guess I had my race face on at work too many times and my co-workers wrote with a Sharpie "Grumpy" on my hardhat and just fitted me , I suppose. (I'm not really all that Grumpy though). LOL.
In the mid 1980's an unforeseen traffic accident ended my construction days and my so-called racing career to where I had to think about some sort of career change.
Since I wanted to still be involved with motorcycles and racing as well and the love of taking pictures. I broke out the camera and started taking photos of the desert races again. Just a little more full time at this time.
Which is where Photos by Grumpy was born.
I've always loved taking photos of the racers since it was the challenge to find and shoot that special location on course to make everyone look their best while racing across the desert. It doesn't matter if you're a seasoned pro or just a weekend warrior. I want to get you in that special location looking your best. I've always said " the photo I take of you, and the photo I take is what I would like to have on my wall if I was still racing".
So, there you have it my life story in a nut shell.
Now it's time to start planning my next event and get ready to take your pictures out in the middle of nowhere in the special spot.
Be safe out on the trail and be sure to look for the Photos by Grumpy banner out on the trail somewhere.
Thank you for your interest & support, See you at the races....Grumpy
